Excerpt from Aphrodite: Musical Drama in Five Acts and Seven Tableaux
The fifth act comprises three tableaux, the first of which is sometimes omitted. This tableau shows the lighthouse of Alexandria. A crowd of men and women are in commotion over the theft and murder. Chrysis enters and speaks enigmatically of a miracle about to happen. Then another crowd arrives from the temple with the startling news that the pearls of the goddess have been stolen. While the people talk distractedly of the dire vengeance to be awaited from heaven, Chrysis suddenly appears on a gallery of the lighthouse, with the comb in her hair, the mirror in her hand, and the pearls around her neck. The crowd below, thinking that she is Aphrodite, sing her praises; but suddenly they recognize the courtesan and storm the tower.
