Excerpt from Studies in Napoleonic Statesmanship: Germany
For the history of the grand-duchy of Berg the student must go to the Archives Nationales in Paris and to the Staatsarchiv at Dusseldorf. The material at the Archives Nationales is extremely voluminous, but beautifully arranged and catalogued. I have read not all, but nearly all, that is to be found there. At Dusseldorf the mass of papers is even greater, and the cataloguing very rough. Much of the material, pro bably most of it, is a duplicate of documents trans mitted to Paris; but nevertheless the archives repay a visit, and I regret that my stay was necessarily so short. There are a few papers concerning the grand duchy at the Ministere des Affaires Etrangeres, but they are of slight importance.
